Genomics, Cancer, and Asbestos – ISS Presenting at DRI Asbestos Medicine Seminar

Innovative Science Solutions and two partner organizations – Venebio Group and the LSP Group – will be presenting at the upcoming Asbestos Medicine DRI Seminar being held in Las Vegas on November 5-6, 2015.

Our session, titled Genetics, Epigenetics, and Cancer Syndromes in Asbestos Litigation will discuss the increasing importance of molecular science for tort litigation, with a focus on asbestos-related science.

The incidence of pleural mesothelioma is not falling at the predicted rate (a surprise to some people), and peritoneal mesotheliomas are holding steady, especially in women. Molecular biology is racing forward to provide new insights into the how and why of mesotheliomas and lung cancers, including the identification of “signatures” which may help point to the source of disease.

The revolution in molecular biology will continue to expand, even if defendants continue to
ignore the subject.

New molecular findings can and will be argued in the cases defendants do not want to settle, such as “low dose” mesothelioma cases and lung cancer cases with a significant smoking history and/or low levels of asbestos exposure. In addition, recent research has identified
associations between asbestos intake and a variety of “other cancers.” In this genomic age, molecular investigations are surely not far behind.

Our seminar, and the accompanying manuscript (available as a free download below), is composed of three major sections as follows:

1) Framing of Asbestos Legal Issues in the Context of New Molecular Science (Kirk Hartley, Esq.)

Molecular science is increasingly important for tort litigation from drug cases, to benzene cases,
to asbestos cases. The importance of molecular science for tort litigation will increase and
accelerate, and disregarding developments will lead to unpleasant surprises for many interested
groups.

2) Basic Principles Related to Asbestos Science and Medicine (Venebio Group)

An informative primer designed for attorneys on the subjects of Genomics, Transcriptomics, and Epigenomics.

2) Recent Scientific Developments in Asbestos Related Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer (ISS)

New molecular technologies are revealing genetic, epigenetic, and cellular changes associated
with mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestos exposure. Some of the latest science is highlighted.

Talc and Asbestos Defendants Should Monitor and Utilize Published Studies Linking Mesothelioma to Genomic Causes

Plaintiff experts having been asserting for decades that all mesotheliomas must be linked to some asbestos exposure. Indeed, this has led to the erroneous (but widespread) view that mesothelioma is a signature disease, only caused by asbestos exposure. Read more
